Drie Pikkewyne wat Jonk Bly
This week the internal concerts at my company are on again! Whooohooo!
It seems we’ve gone a full circle. We started in the auditorium in 2004. We’re back in the auditorium. We started on a very tight budget in 2004. We’re back on an even tighter budget. I had to sing the upbeat Afrikaans songs in 2004. I have to sing two upbeat Afrikaans songs this year, because no-one else wants to.
This year the concert is not sponsored by my employer and in fact, technically, they are not associated with it. It’s for the benefit of a retirement home in Kraaifontein. So the sound is being done by musical genius Frank Cuddumbey. In fact, I think the only thing we’re paying for is the auditorium (not sure though). The spectators have been asked to donate at least R10. So it’s for a good cause, hence I don’t really care if I have to sing the brainless Afrikaans songs again.
My two songs are:
- Drie Pikkewyne by Jakkie Louw
- Jonk Bly by Nic Stevens
The two songs really aren’t very deep, but I must admit they are very catchy! I got some really great backtracks from friend that include decent backing vocals. That’s quite rare to find. Both songs are in my range (anything above middle C is a bit tough for me) so I really let it rip.
Today was the first concert. The auditorium was only 75% full, so I was sceptical, but the crowd was great. I know from before that when I, as performer, clap my hands trying to get the audience to join in with the clapping… and they actually DO, then I know we’ve got a great, responsive audience.
Because of time constraints, I sang only Drie Pikkewyne today. I was dopping on some whiskey backstage to calm the nerves and I think I struck just the right balance
The audience loved it. Or maybe it just seemed like that to me, but I didn’t hold back with the singing or the porno moves and after the song was finished, some people jumped up and gave me a standing ovulation ovation.
Seeing that the song is about penguins, I wore my sweater with a white front and dark sleeves. I also put on a bow tie. Maybe I looked more like a chippendale than a penguin though!
I’ve also been letting my hair grow. I have brown curly hair, which, when it gets long, it just grows up; it doesn’t fall down or anything. Before the concert I put in mousse and blow dried it so I really had a whopping afro. I don’t really know if that was a success but I think it contributes to the whole crazy image.
Tomorrow and Wednesday I’ll do both songs. I hope I have as much enthusiasm as I had today and that I don’t offend anyone with my pelvic thrust moves on stage!
